It can appear overwhelming at first. You join a gym with all great intentions, you’ve learned how to use free weights correctly and you’ve planned your workout. You warm up on the treadmill, elliptical or bike and you’re ready to make your move to the free weights!
You march over with confidence and upon arrival you hit a wall of challenges.
It seems as if everyone at the free weights is male and twice the size of you. There are no benches and the weights you need are missing.
But wait, there’s no reason to turn away. Here are a few ways around challenges at the free weights.
Challenge 1 – Intimidated by others. Don’t be. You are a client too. This is your gym and this is your workout. Go for it and do your best. You may actually intimidate others! But more importantly, remember everyone is on a different fitness path, some have been at it longer than others. So with admiration you can find inspiration without intimidation.
Challenge 2 – There are no available benches. Use a bench on a nearby apparatus and begin your workout until a better bench opens up. Or, do some sets on the cable machines and before you know it, there will be a bench.
Challenge 3 – The weight(s) you need are not there. Grab the next level down on dumb bells and do more reps. You can still get a great workout as long as you take your time with each movement, assuring perfect posture. (It’s surprising how much heavier weights become with more repetitions.)
Challenge 4 – Someone is hoarding the weights you need. When they are between sets, respectfully ask if you can work in a few sets with the weights. Most people will comply if you ask nicely.
Free weights offer an amazing advanced workout, reaping incredible results. Don’t shy away. This is your body. This is your life. Take charge and by all means, make it fun!
